Drooping eyelids can affect vision, appearance, or both, and patients are often unsure which type of eyelid surgery they may need. In this video, Dr. Gil Epstein explains the key differences between ptosis repair and blepharoplasty, including when surgery is medically necessary versus cosmetic. He also outlines how each procedure is used to address eyelid concerns and what patients should consider when exploring their treatment options.
Hi, I’m Dr. Gil Epstein. Many times, I get asked what the difference is between ptosis repair and blepharoplasty. Ptosis is the drooping of the upper lid, either caused by a weakening of the muscle or by excessive skin overhanging the edge of the lid to obstruct vision.
Surgical procedures are aimed at repairing the muscle or perhaps removing some of the excessive skin. Blepharoplasty, on the other hand, represents a cosmetic procedure that essentially removes excessive skin as well as some skin and fat from the upper lids or the lower lids. When a case like this may not qualify for medical necessity, it is primarily done to provide a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
