Clinical research plays a vital role in improving eye care and expanding treatment options for patients. In this video, Dr. Stuart Burgess, retinal surgeon and Director of Clinical Research at the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute, explains how clinical studies help advance new therapies, technologies, and medications. He also discusses how patients who participate in research may gain early access to innovative treatments while contributing to the future of ophthalmology.

Hello, my name is Dr. Stuart Burgess, and I’m one of the retinal surgeons at the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute. I’m also the director of our clinical research department.

Patient care is always the top priority at our practice, and one of the ways that we advance this mission is through the use of clinical research. Clinical research allows us to discover new treatments, technologies, and medications that can improve vision and overall eye health.

By participating, our patients often gain early access to innovative treatments and therapies, and therefore, they get this early access while at the same time contributing to the future of ophthalmology and medical care.

We’ve been honored to lead studies on various conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusions.

Each study is conducted under strict safety protocols and with close monitoring, and patients always receive compassionate care from our entire research department.
