Causes and Treatments Explained

Excessive tearing and watery eyes can be frustrating and may interfere with daily activities. In this video, Dr. Gil Epstein explains some of the most common causes of tearing, including dry eye, eyelid malposition, irritation, and blocked tear ducts. He also discusses how these conditions are diagnosed and the treatment options available to help relieve symptoms and restore proper tear drainage.

Hi, my name is Dr. Gil Epstein. I’m an Oculoplastic Specialist at Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute.

I’m here today to talk about tearing. Tearing is a very common problem that we see in oculoplastic surgery.

Tearing is usually caused by one of two things. One is it’s caused by too many tears being produced, and that could be when the eye is infected with conjunctivitis, dry eye, blepharitis, and any type of irritation to the eye.

On the other hand, tearing could also be caused by inability to drain the tears. That could be caused by a lid malposition, such as an entropion or inward turning of the lid, or more commonly with an ectropion, which is an outward turning of the lid. These types of problems can be readily fixed with surgical repair of the eyelids.

Also, other causes of tearing could include blocked tear ducts. The tear ducts drain the tears and can be blocked at the level of the tear duct opening at the beginning or all the way through the tear duct system at any point. And that can cause tearing and sometimes can cause infections.

Many of these types of cases require a repair of the tear duct system and can be completely cured. I hope this helps in which way with regards to your tearing.
