Living in South Florida and being exposed to year-round sun exposure can leave your skin looking dry, blotchy, and wrinkled. Along with too much sun exposure, acne, aging, and other environmental factors can contribute to blemishes and poor facial texture. Laser skin resurfacing is a proven technique that effectively treats wrinkles, melasma, fine lines, and acne scars. Other methods, like chemical peels or microdermabrasion, can cause bruising, bleeding, and extreme discomfort. They also have a longer recovery time. Laser skin resurfacing is an excellent option for restoring a more youthful, healthier appearance to your skin.
What To Expect During Surgery
For about six weeks before the procedure, your oculoplastic surgeon might recommend a series of skin treatments to prepare your skin. The procedure involves pulsating beams of light that cause the top layer of skin in the applied areas to fall off. New skin can then develop and fill in the wrinkles and crevices. This procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how many facial areas are being treated. This is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day.
What To Expect After Surgery
After surgery, your surgeon will bandage the treated areas. These areas must be cleaned 4-5 times a day before applying ointment to prevent scabs and infections. Swelling, itching, and stinging are all normal post-surgery. After about a week, your skin will become dry and peel. Healing can take 10 to 21 days, depending on the number of treated areas and how your skin responds to the treatment.
Because your face is extra sensitive during the healing process, you should limit sun exposure and makeup use. Reapplying sunscreen and moisturizing your face are two critical factors to proper healing.
Is It Right For You?
Laser skin resurfacing is a great option for patients who want their skin to look and feel rejuvenated. However, not every patient is an ideal candidate for this procedure. If you have darker skin or are prone to scarring, skin disorders, or other medical conditions, you might not be a good fit for laser skin resurfacing.
