Our eyes age just as we do. Aging brings about changes in eyesight, and overall optical health. In observance of Healthy Aging Month, we join the American Academy of Ophthalmology in raising awareness of the symptoms of vision loss and the necessary eye care steps to prevent it. “One in six Americans aged 65 and older, have a vision impairment that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The risk of eye disease increases with age, yet many older adults neglect to see an ophthalmologist for care.”
Farther along the aging process, you are at higher risk of forming age-related eye diseases and ailments such as AMD, cataract, diabetic eye disease, dry eye, and glaucoma. Having a family history of eye disease also increases your chances of suffering the aforementioned complications. Obesity and other systemic conditions can lead to vision loss. If you are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight, please talk to your doctor for physical health solutions.
