Uveitis is the inflammation of the uvea. Three parts make up the uvea; iris, ciliary body, and choroid. The uvea’s importance in the eye is to provide blood flow to the deep layers of the retina. When the uvea is inflamed, it causes eye injury and inflammatory diseases. There are different types of uveitis conditions, including:
- Anterior uveitis affects the front of the eye
- Intermediate uveitis affects the ciliary body
- Posterior uveitis affects the back of the eye
- Panuveitis affects all layers of the uvea
Symptoms may include light sensitivity, decreased visual acuity, eye pain, and eye redness.
It is the fifth leading cause of vision loss in the United States and affects 20 to 60 years of age. Most cases of uveitis have an unclear root, but are typically detected in cases of inflammatory disorders, medication side effects, eye injury, or when eye cancer is present.
Receiving prompt and proper treatment of uveitis is very important, as treatment may help decrease your chances of cataracts, glaucoma, band keratopathy, retina edema, and permanent vision loss. Schedule a consultation with one of our ophthalmologists today at 954-741-5555 or request an appointment,
