Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures performed today, helping millions regain clear vision. We appreciate how this procedure has evolved over thousands of years to become the safe, effective treatment it is now.

Early Beginnings
The earliest form of cataract treatment dates back over 2,000 years to ancient India and Greece. Back then, a procedure called “couching” was used to push the cloudy lens out of the way. While innovative at the time, it wasn’t always successful and carried significant risks.
Key Advance
In the 18th century, surgeons began removing the entire cataract instead of just moving it aside, providing better results. The biggest leap came in the mid-20th century when artificial lenses were introduced. Implanting these lenses after cataract removal allowed patients to see clearly without relying on thick glasses.
Modern Techniques
The development of phacoemulsification in the late 1960s introduced ultrasound technology to break up the cloudy lens, allowing for smaller incisions and quicker recovery times. Today, laser-assisted cataract surgery offers even greater precision and safety.
Looking Ahead
Continuous advancements, such as new types of intraocular lenses that correct a range of vision issues. At Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute, we use the latest technology and techniques to ensure each patient receives the best care possible.
