According to the Prevent Blindness (PB) organization’s report (from a study by the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center) in last year’s Focus on Eye Health National Summit, common eye diseases will increase by 60 to 80 percent in 2050. Cataracts are expected to be more prevalent in the elderly due to more Baby Boomers in the next 40 years. The report further anticipated that glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy will continue to prevail among Hispanics and African-Americans in the country.
In an effort to increase public awareness about the dangers of untreated eye diseases and the importance of taking preventative steps as early as possible, Ophthalmologist Dr.Luis Fernandez de Castro of the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute will be hosting a free informative presentation– An Update on Eye Diseases You Should Know About — on February 10 at 900 S. Pine Island Rd. Plantation, Florida, just across the breezeway from our main office. The latest trends in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of common eye problems and vision-related changes such as cataracts, glaucoma, cornea diseases, and macular degeneration will be discussed.
Dr. De Castro’s passion in patient education is a result of his extensive experience in treating a wide variety of ocular morbidities. Furthermore, Dr. De Castro’s continuing research on cataracts, corneal diseases, and refractive errors has made it possible for him to acquire the most recent information on improving existing diagnostic and treatment modalities to prevent vision loss. He has also published a good number of research papers in premier ophthalmology journals and presented the results in both national and international conventions.
