Project Description
You’ve tried various dry eye treatments, but you still feel that gritty sensation in your eye, or need to blink frequently when using a computer. Moderate to severe dry eye patients, or those with lid conditions such as blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction, might be candidates for intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL – an exciting way to manage symptoms.
IPL is commonly used in dermatology to treat skin issues such as sun damage or dilated blood vessels. Patients receiving the treatment for their skin also experienced improved dry eye symptoms, and now IPL is an option for those suffering from dry eye. IPL uses brief bursts of light to target abnormal blood vessels thought to contribute to meibomian gland inflammation. In addition to closing off blood vessels, the treatment warms and unplugs the meibomian glands to help release oils for proper lubrication of the eye.
IPL is an in-office procedure that takes about 20 minutes. During the procedure, your eyes will be covered with a protective shield. A cooling gel may be applied to the treatment area and your eye care professional will use the handheld IPL machine to administer the treatment. You will feel a warm sensation with each burst of light. Afterwards, your doctor will express your meibomian glands, to help release any blockages.
For optimal results, multiple sessions are recommended and your doctor will recommend a customized treatment schedule for your needs. IPL treatment is not for everyone, and can have side effects like lightening of the skin and temporary mild to moderate redness and swelling surrounding the treated area. If dry eye is causing you discomfort, ask us whether IPL is an option for you!
