Project Description
Over time, the skin of your eyelids can begin to droop into your field of vision and obstruct your line of sight. This can be addressed with a procedure called functional blepharoplasty, where the eyelid skin is lifted up to improve your field of vision. This is different than a cosmetic blepharoplasty, which focuses on improving the aesthetics of both the upper and lower eyelids.
A functional blepharoplasty lifts your upper eyelid by removing excess tissue. The incision is usually hidden within the crease of the eyelid. If your eyelid muscle needs additional support, a separate procedure called ptosis repair might be needed or performed.
The blepharoplasty procedure requires only local anesthesia, and you will be able to go home the same day, and won’t need to wear an eye patch. However, you may experience temporary bruising around your eye, and it may feel dry. Your doctor might recommend applying antibiotics, an ice pack, or both to the surgical site. Swelling can take up to three months to heal completely and you may need to avoid exercise for a period of time after the surgery.
By improving your peripheral vision, functional blepharoplasty can help you navigate daily activities with more confidence.
Talk to your Ophthalmologist to see if functional blepharoplasty is right for you.
