OVERVIEW:  

To perform all job functions in a professional manner consistent with the policies and procedures of Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute.  Primarily responsible for medically assisting the doctor and accurately documenting the patient examination in their chart.  Must be willing to travel between the two offices.  Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in highly stressful daily situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist the physician throughout the clinic, retrieving patient data, transcribe the impression and plan, enter test interpretations, enter new data, listen to and summarize the conversations between the patient and physician, e-prescribe RXs, order appropriate testing for patient, print out any patient education material per the physician’s request, print out glasses Rx, mark encounter forms as instructed, perform patient education and assist with some procedures
  • Maintain a smooth patient flow to and with the physician
  • Finish closing or signing doctor out of patient’s exams as needed by doctor’s orders and/or instructions
  • Assist with phone messages from Tech Triage phone when available or assigned
  • Load patients in exam rooms after they have been worked up by the Technician and ready or are waiting to see the physician after dilation
  • Seek advice from Technicians as needed, never perform beyond capabilities
  • Escort patients from the exam or testing area to the check-out in the front when necessary
  • Engage and interact with all patients in a friendly, respectful and professional manner at all times
  • Medically assist the doctor through the patient examination
  • Scribe and document for the physician in patient’s EHR in NextGen
  • Enter patient information into NextGen system for accurate record keeping
  • Prepare examination rooms to provide all needed medications, forms, consents and educational brochures and material
  • Coordinate special testing needs with Technicians and/or surgical needs with the Surgical Coordinators or their Assistants
  • Create a sterile environment using sterile techniques for in office procedures
  • Accurately perform and document the following tests: OPTOS, OCT, OPD III-corneal topo along with Visual Fields
  • Knowledge of Ophthalmic terminology and equipment
  • Assist Doctor with patient calls, pharmacy calls, and return all patient phones and tasks assigned daily by end of day
  • Communicate all physician instructions to patients and/or other doctor’s offices as directed, fax reports, letters, post op visits to referring providers
  • Must have the ability to travel to both office locations and work with any doctor as assigned
  • NextGen electronic health records experience preferred and must have good typing computer skills
  • Provide assistance to co-workers as needed
  • And all other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisors, managers, administrator or physicians.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound, visual field, and other machines used for testing.
  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING: 

  • High School diploma or GED, Medical Assistant designation and or Medical Scribe six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Team oriented and self-motivated with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

  • Certification in Medical and/or Ophthalmology Scribing preferred but not required 

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment.
