Stuart K. Burgess, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.S.R.S.
Dr. Burgess, our Director of Clinical Research, specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal, macular, and vitreal diseases, including the management of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, uveitis, ocular tumors, and ocular trauma.
He is board–certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Retinal Specialists.
Dr. Burgess is a skilled and compassionate physician dedicated to preserving and restoring his patients’ vision.
He was one of the first retinal specialists to research and offer advanced treatments for macular degeneration, including the various anti–VEG F agents, Lucentis®️, Avastin, Eylea®️, and Vabysmo ® . He was a principal investigator and involved in the clinical studies that led to the approval of some of these agents, and is currently involved in research for additional more advanced agents to treat a variety of retinal diseases. He was involved in many of the trials that led to the approval of Susvimo ® port delivery system of Ranibizumab which allows for sustained delivery and limits the need for intravitreal injections. Dr. Burgess also has participated in important trials as an investigator with the DRCR Retina Network. Additionally, he was involved in research trials of the geographic atrophy form of dry macular degeneration and is now offering Syfovre ® to his patients suffering from this condition. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and he has been a presenter at national ophthalmic meetings.
Dr. Burgess was raised in Boca Raton. He attended college at Tulane University and then attended the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he earned an M.D. degree in 1991. Dr. Burgess then completed his residency in ophthalmology at Cornell University’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, where he was the chief resident in ophthalmology.
After residency, Dr. Burgess completed a two–year subspecialty fellowship in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreous diseases at the highly rated Shiley Eye Institute at the University of California San Diego. He was involved in innovative research studying diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and macular holes during his fellowship.
Dr. Burgess joined the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute in 1999 as the group’s retinal subspecialist and has grown the department since that time. Namely, he founded and directs our clinical research department. He practices at both our Plantation and Fort Lauderdale offices, which are convenient to patients in Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties.
