Ophthalmic Technician

OVERVIEW:

Tests and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologists to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tests patient’s far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
  • Examines eye for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers.
  • Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
  • Measures intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test).
  • Tests patient’s field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and documents patient’s test results in EHR
  • Measures axial length of eye.
  • Performs other tests and measurements as requested by Ophthalmologist.
  • Gives instructions to patients concerning eye care.
  • Fill Rx in compliance with physician’s supervision.
  • Enter patient information into NextGen system for accurate record keeping.
  • Uploading patient imaging into patient’s electronic medical record in Next Gen
  • Assist with phone tech triage urgent and emergent calls
  • Assist with lab testing
  • Assure the patient intake information is current and accurate through medical history, pharmacy, referring provider/OD, and PCP
  • Complete all assigned Tasks through NexGen by end of day
  • Assist with all other duties as assigned by supervisor, manager, administrator or physician
  • Ability to work at both locations: Plantation and Ft. Lauderdale with reliable transportation
  • All other duties as assigned

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound, visual field, and other machines used for testing.
  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manager interactions with difficult people.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING: 

  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

  • Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology preferred but not required 

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Word processing software.
  • Spreadsheet software.
