If you’re facing challenges with your vision due to retinal issues, vitrectomy may be a procedure worth exploring. At Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute, we offer this advanced surgical procedure using state-of-the-art technology to help protect and restore your eyesight.

A vitrectomy is a surgery in which a specialized eye surgeon carefully removes the

vitreous gel, the clear, jelly-like substance inside your eye. It is typically performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia with mild sedation to keep you comfortable.

Conditions that often require vitrectomy include retinal detachment, macular holes, diabetic eye disease, bleeding inside the eye, or severe eye injuries.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes tiny, precise incisions in the eye, using specialized instruments to gently remove the vitreous gel.  These small, self-sealing openings typically do not require stitches, which helps reduce healing time and minimizes discomfort after surgery.

After the vitreous is removed, the eye may be filled with a sterile saline solution, a gas bubble, or silicone oil. These substances help keep the retina in place while your eye heals.

Your doctor will provide specific post-surgery care instructions, which may include positioning your head in certain ways if a gas bubble was used to keep your retina supported.

If you’ve noticed sudden vision changes, flashes of light, new floaters, or blurry vision, it’s important to see an eye specialist promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in preserving vision.

Our experienced retina surgeons tailor each vitrectomy to your specific condition and needs. We are committed to providing compassionate, patient-friendly care by using the most current techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes for your vision.
